The prevalence of Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has exposed us to an excessive amount of blue light (BL) which causes various ophthalmic diseases. Previous studies have shown that conjunctiva is vulnerable to BL. In this study, we aimed to investigate the underlying mechanism of BL-induced injury in conjunctiva. We placed C57BL/6 mice and human conjunctival epithelial cell lines (HCECs) under BL (440 nm ± 15 nm, 0.2 mW/cm2) to establish a BL injury model in vivo and in vitro. Immunohistochemistry and MDA assay were used to identify lipid peroxidation (LPO) in vivo. HE staining was applied to detect morphological damage of conjunctival epithelium. DCFH-DA, C11-BODIPY 581/591, Calcein-AM, and FeRhoNox™-1 probes were performed to identify ferroptosis levels in vitro. Real-time qPCR and Western blotting techniques were employed to uncover signaling pathways of blue light-induced ferroptosis. Our findings demonstrated that BL affected tear film instability and induced conjunctival epithelium injury in vivo. Ferrostatin-1 significantly alleviated blue light-induced ferroptosis in vivo and in vitro. BL downregulates the levels of solute carrier family 7 member 11 (SLC7A11), Ferritin heavy chain (FTH1), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX4) by inhibiting the activation and translocation of the Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) from inducing Fe2+ burst, ROS and LPO accumulation, ultimately resulting in ferroptosis. This study will offer new insight into BL-induced conjunctival injury and LED-induced dry eye.

BACKGROUND: Actinic keratosis (AK) is a precancerous lesion that occurs in areas that are chronically exposed to sunlight and has the potential to develop into invasive cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC). We investigated the efficacy of 20% 5-aminolevulinic acid-photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) with LED red light for the treatment of AK in Chinese patients by examining changes in dermoscopic features, histopathology and fluorescence after treatment. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with fourty-six AK lesions from March 2022 to September 2023 were treated with 20% ALA, and 3 hours later, they were irradiated with LED red light (80-100 mW/cm2) for 20 minutes. A session of 20% ALA-PDT was performed once a week for three consecutive weeks, and the dermoscopic, histopathological, fluorescent and photoaging outcomes were measured one week after the treatment. RESULTS: One week after ALA-PDT, complete remission (CR) was reached in 53.6% of patients. The CR of Grade I AK lesions was 100%, that of Grade II lesions was 71.4%, and that of Grade III lesions was 38.1%. There was a significant improvement in the dermoscopic features, epidermal thickness and fluorescence of the AK lesions. The presence of red fluorescence decreased, and there was an association between CR and post-PDT fluorescence intensity. ALA-PDT also exhibited efficacy in treating photoaging, including fine lines, sallowness, mottled pigmentation, erythema, and telangiectasias, and improved the global score for photoaging. There were no serious adverse effects during or after ALA-PDT, and 82.1% of the patients were satisfied with the treatment. CONCLUSION: AK lesions can be safely and effectively treated with 20% ALA-PDT with LED red light, which also alleviates photoaging in Chinese patients, including those with multiple AKs. This study highlights the possibility that fluorescence could be used to diagnose AK with peripheral field cancerization and evaluate the efficacy of ALA-PDT.

Objective: To conduct a meta-analysis to investigate the effects of Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy on running performance. Introduction: PBM has recently been advocated as a valuable non-pharmacological ergogenic strategy, however, the efficacy of PBM on running performance remains unproven. Methods: A computerized literature search was conducted until June 2023. The databases searched were PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were determined through the PICO process. The running variables analyzed were time-trial or time-to-exhaustion. Results were combined with the standardized mean differences (SMD) and the 95% confidence intervals. Results: Twelve studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. No significant effects in favor of PBM were found (SMD = 0.13; p = 0.11). There was no effect considering the presence (SMD = 0.16; p = 0.38) and absence (SMD = 0.11; p = 0.25) of training, and there was no dose-response effect (p = 0.82). Conclusion: Our findings indicate that PBM alone or combined with a training program does not improve running performance in terms of time-trial and time-to-exhaustion testing. More studies involving PBM plus training and doses higher than 1000 J are needed to determine if PBM is effective in improving running performance.

III-nitrides possess several unique qualities, which allow them to make the world brighter, but their uniqueness is not always beneficial. The uniaxial nature of the wurtzite crystal leads to strikingly large electric polarization fields, which along with the high acceptor ionization energy cause low injection efficiency and uneven carrier distribution for multiple quantum well (QW) light emitting devices. In this work, we explore the carrier distribution in Ga-polar LED in two configurations: standard "p-up" and "p-down", which is accomplished by utilizing a bottom-tunnel junction. This enables the inversion of the sequence of the p and n layers while altering the direction of the current flow with respect to the inherent polarization. To probe the carrier distribution two, color-coded QWs are used in alternating sequences. Our study reveals that for "p-down" devices carrier transport through multiple QWs is limited by the potential barrier at the QW interface, which is in contrast to results for "p-up" structures, where hole mobility is the bottleneck. Moreover, investigated "p-down" LEDs exhibit an extremely low turn-on voltage.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been widely applied in optoelectronic devices owing to their excellent photoluminescence (PL) properties. However, poor stability upon exposure to water, UV light or heat strongly limits their practical application. Herein, CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites with exceptional stability against water, UV light, and heat are synthesized by ultrasonic processing the precursors of lead-based MOF (Pb-MOF), oleylammonium bromide (OAmBr) and cesium oleate (Cs-OA) solutions at room temperature. Pb-MOF can not only provide the lead source for the in situ growth of CsPbBr3 NCs, but also the protective layer of perovskites NCs. The formed CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites show a considerable PL quantum yield (PLQY) of 67.8%, and can maintain 90% of the initial PL intensity when immersed in water for 2 months. In addition, the outstanding PL stability against UV light and heat is demonstrated with CsPbBr3 NCs synthesized by the conventional method as a comparison. Finally, a green (light-emitting diode) LED is fabricated using green-emitting CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites and exhibits excellent stability without packaging when immersed in water for 30 days. This study provides a practical approach to improve the stability in aqueous phase, which may pave the way for future applications for various optoelectronic devices.

In this research we present a low-cost system for breath acetone analysis based on UV-LED photoacoustic spectroscopy. We considered the end-tidal phase of exhalation, which represents the systemic concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) - providing clinically relevant information about the human health. This is achieved via the development of a CO2-triggered breath sampling system, which collected alveolar breath over several minutes in sterile and inert containers. A real-time mass spectrometer is coupled to serve as a reference device for calibration measurements and subsequent breath analysis. The new sensor system provided a 3σ detection limit of 8.3 ppbV and an NNEA of 1.4E-9 Wcm-1Hz-0.5. In terms of the performed breath analysis measurements, 12 out of 13 fell within the error margin of the photoacoustic measurement system, demonstrating the reliability of the measurements in the field.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the handoff guidance (HG) self-management intervention for multimorbid chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients following hospitalization for acute exacerbation of COPD (AECOPD) using HG self-management intervention compared to a control group on COPD self-management outcomes (self-care, self-efficacy, health engagement) and assess feasibility, acceptability, and healthcare utilization. A randomized pilot study used a 2-group with repeated measures design. Adults with COPD who had been hospitalized for AECOPD were recruited. After discharge, the HG self-management intervention employed health coaching delivered at: 1-3, 10-12, and 20-22 days after hospital discharge. Follow-up data collected was collected at 1-3, 10-12, 20-22, 30, 60, and 90 days after hospital discharge. A total of 29 subjects participated, with a mean age of 66 (+8.7) years old, the majority were females (n = 18). Intervention participants reported the acceptability of the HG self-management intervention. Participants in both groups continued to report COPD symptoms after discharge, which decreased over time, although not significantly different by group. The use of COPD maintenance, monitoring, and management behaviors was higher in the treatment group, although not significantly different.

Age-related lens opacification (cataract) remains the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness worldwide. In low- and middle-income countries, utilization of cataract surgical services is often limited despite community-based outreach programmes. Community-led research, whereby researchers and community members collaboratively co-design intervention is an approach that ensures the interventions are locally relevant and that their implementation is feasible and socially accepted in the targeted contexts. Community-led interventions have the potential to increase cataract surgery uptake if done appropriately. In this study, once the intervention is co-designed it will be implemented through a cluster-randomized controlled trial (cRCT) with ward as a unit of randomization. This study will utilise both the qualitative methods for co-designing the intervention and the quantitative methods for effective assessment of the developed community-led intervention through a cRCT in 80 rural wards of Dodoma region, Tanzania (40 Intervention). The 'intervention package' will be developed through participatory community meetings and ongoing evaluation and modification of the intervention based on its impact on service utilization. Leask's four stages of intervention co-creation will guide the development within Rifkin's CHOICE framework. The primary outcomes are two: the number of patients attending eye disease screening camps, and the number of patients accepting cataract surgery. NVivo version 12 will be used for qualitative data analysis and Stata version 12 for quantitative data. Independent and paired t-tests will be performed to make comparisons between and within groups. P-values less than 0.05 will be considered statistically significant.

AIM: This study explores the experiences of interprofessional collaboration of Canadian midwives and obstetricians from midwives' perspective. DESIGN: A concurrent mixed-methods approach that combined a small validation study and qualitative thematic analysis was used to provide evidence of the nature and importance of collaboration between Registered Midwives (RMs) and obstetricians. METHOD: Eighteen RMs across Canada completed a demographic survey and the Midwifery-Obstetrician Collaboration (MOC) scale in 2023. The quantitative analyses were conducted to assess the reliability of the Midwifery-Obstetrician Collaboration (MOC) and accumulate preliminary evidence to support its validity. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 participants. After completing the interviews, themes were identified using thematic analysis. RESULTS: The primary themes identified were knowledge of midwifery scope affects collaboration, collaboration is necessary for effective patient care, midwife-physician collaboration is impacted by power differentials and hierarchies, and proposed methods to improve physician-midwife collaboration. Although a small sample size did not permit extensive statistical testing, the quantitative results supported the reliability of the MOC scale. In addition, a strong correlation between the MOC and the communication subscale of the Inter-Professional Collaboration (IPC) scale provided evidence of the MOC's concurrent validity as a measure of collaboration between midwives and physicians. CONCLUSION: This study provides support for the Midwifery-Obstetrics Collaboration (MOC) Scale as an assessment tool to evaluate collaboration between midwives and OB/GYNs in obstetrics care. While the 18 RMs recruited for this study provided a fulsome analysis for the qualitative portion, a larger study is necessary to provide more extensive quantitative analysis to validate the MOC scale for continued use among RMs and OBs. IMPLICATIONS: The implications of this study are to foster strong interprofessional relationships between midwives and OBs and to improve the health outcomes of pregnant women and newborns. REPORTING METHOD: The authors adhered to Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ).

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the opportunities and challenges of implementing patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) within advanced practice nursing services in cancer care. METHODS: This discussion paper has been informed by an environmental scan of evidence from systematic reviews and primary studies evaluating the use and implementation of PROMs and PREMs. Literature from the contexts of cancer and chronic disease, including nursing and multidisciplinary supportive care literature, has been included. RESULTS: Advanced practice nurses are well-positioned to evaluate and respond to PROMs and PREMs data; several studies have highlighted improved patient outcomes concerning quality of life, symptom distress, and functional status within nurse-led services. Nevertheless, the implementation of PROMs and PREMs in cancer care and nurse-led services is variable. Previous studies have highlighted implementation challenges, which can hinder comparability and generalizability of PROMs and PREMs instruments. Advanced practice nurses should consider these challenges, including ways to use standardized PROM instruments. Electronic PROMs, while efficient, may exclude individuals at risk of inequity. Complex, lengthy, and frequent administration of PROMs may also overburden people living with or after cancer, with people affected by cancer expressing preference for flexible use in some studies. Therefore, the involvement of people affected by cancer in planning for PROMs/PREMs implementation may overcome this challenge. Finally, organizational considerations in implementation should address financial investments, including initial costs for technology and training and consideration of the operationalization of PROMs within existing infrastructure for the seamless utilization of PROMs data. CONCLUSION: Despite the potential of advanced practice nursing services to enhance patient-reported outcomes and experiences, variability in the implementation of PROMs and PREMs poses challenges. Use of validated measures, electronic or paper-based instruments, and the preferences of people affected by cancer for the use of PROMs and PREMs must be carefully considered in consultation with end users for successful implementation. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: In planning for the implementation of PROMs and PREMs within nurse-led services, implementation risks may be mitigated through establishing clear guidelines for their use, investment in the development of the required infrastructure, user education, and rigorous implementation processes, including patient involvement in PROMs/PREMs selection.

HIV-related stigma is a primary barrier to seeking HIV care. Online social media interventions utilizing peer-led approaches provide an opportunity to revolutionize HIV health behavior change. Secondary analysis of the UCLA HOPE Study (6 waves) was done to examine the effectiveness of an online peer-led intervention in reducing HIV-related internalized stigma (IS), association between IS and sexual risk behaviors (SRB), and associated costs for changing the likelihood of HIV testing. Among 897 participants, an inverse relationship between IS (Discomfort with people with HIV, Stereotypes, Moral Judgment) and SRB (Number of Sexual Partners, Sexual Encounters) factors was identified over time (p < .05). Engagement in stigma conversations increased participant likelihood to request HIV tests (B = 0.02, Wald = 8.10, p = .004) when made in group versus one-on-one contact. Innovative technology has potential to improve HIV-care efforts through expanded reach to at-risk populations, improved communication maintenance, ease of accessibility, and user anonymity.

Necrosis is common in skin flap surgeries. Photobiomodulation, a noninvasive and effective technique, holds the potential to enhance microcirculation and neovascularization. As such, it has emerged as a viable approach for mitigating the occurrence of skin flap necrosis. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the scientific literature considering the use of photobiomodulation to increase skin-flap viability. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA), was used to conducted systematic literature search in the databases PubMed, SCOPUS, Elsevier and, Scielo on June 2023. Included studies investigated skin-flap necrosis employing PBMT irradiation as a treatment and, at least one quantitative measure of skin-flap necrosis in any animal model. Twenty-five studies were selected from 54 original articles that addressed PBMT with low-level laser (LLL) or light-emitting diode (LED) in agreement with the qualifying requirements. Laser parameters varied markedly across studies. In the selected studies, the low-level laser in the visible red spectrum was the most frequently utilized PBMT, although the LED PBMT showed a similar improvement in skin-flap necrosis. Ninety percent of the studies assessing the outcomes of the effects of PBMT reported smaller areas of necrosis in skin flap. Studies have consistently demonstrated the ability of PBMT to improve skin flap viability in animal models. Evidence suggests that PBMT, through enhancing angiogenesis, vascular density, mast cells, and VEGF, is an effective therapy for decrease necrotic tissue in skin flap surgery.

Patient-centered care (PCC) is a key domain of healthcare quality. Its importance is driven by evidence-based medicine, the predominance of chronic conditions requiring self-care, and the recognition of the priority of patient goals, values, priorities, and preferences in determining care plans. This article emphasizes the urgent need for Africa to develop PCC and a workforce committed to its implementation, as well as highlights an initiative by African medical students to champion PCC continent-wide. Embracing this transformative approach presents Africa with an unprecedented opportunity to improve care for each person. Through a comprehensive exploration of unique strategies and considerations in African health professions education, this viewpoint seeks to spark dialogue and inspire action towards a future where patient-centered care is the foundation of healthcare delivery in Africa.

Context: Adolescent suicides are a significant public health concern in India and understanding the intersecting perspectives becomes imperative for the prevention of various mental health concerns. Aim: Assessing perceptions of various key stakeholders, that is, mental health experts, school and college teachers, and District Mental Health Program staff about peer-led strength building programs for suicide prevention. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional qualitative design using two Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with mental health experts and teachers and one FGD with DMHP staff was conducted. The sample comprised 45 participants from Bengaluru urban district. Materials and Methods: The data were analyzed manually by the method of direct content analysis, and themes were determined using existing literature. Results: The teachers and the DMHP highlighted the need for an intensive training program/module that is necessary to be developed in order to train the peer leaders first. The mental health experts opined that creating a network will help in easy identification of the cases and appropriate treatment could be provided without delays. Conclusions: This study indicated that suicide is a preventable public health emergency and inaccessibility to existing as well as proper support systems was perceived as a major concern. Therefore, peer-led programs are beneficial in steering and improving help seeking behavior in suicidal adolescents.

The study aimed to explore the impact of a novel near-infrared LED (nNIR) with an extended spectrum on skin enhancement and hair growth. Various LED sources, including White and nNIRs, were compared across multiple parameters: cytotoxicity, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) reduction, skin thickness, collagen synthesis, collagenase expression, and hair follicle growth. Experiments were conducted on human skin cells and animal models. Cytotoxicity, ATP synthesis, and ROS reduction were evaluated in human skin cells exposed to nNIRs and Whites. LED irradiation effects were also studied on a UV-induced photoaging mouse model, analyzing skin thickness, collagen synthesis, and collagenase expression. Hair growth promotion was examined as well. Results revealed both White and nNIR were non-cytotoxic to human skin cells. nNIR enhanced ATP and collagen synthesis while reducing ROS levels, outperforming the commonly used 2chip LEDs. In the UV-induced photoaging mouse model, nNIR irradiation led to reduced skin thickness, increased collagen synthesis, and lowered collagenase expression. Additionally, nNIR irradiation stimulated hair growth, augmented skin thickness, and increased hair follicle count. In conclusion, the study highlighted positive effects of White and nNIR irradiation on skin and hair growth. However, nNIR exhibited superior outcomes compared to White. Its advancements in ATP content, collagen synthesis, collagenase inhibition, and hair growth promotion imply increased ATP synthesis activity. These findings underscore nNIR therapy's potential as an innovative and effective approach for enhancing skin and promoting hair growth.

Luminescent Mn(II)-based organic-inorganic hybrid halides have drawn attention as potential materials for sensing and photonics applications. Here, the synthesis and characterization of methylammonium (MA) manganese bromide ((MA)nBrxMn(H2O)2, (n = 1, 4 and x = 3, 6)) with different stoichiometries of the organic cation and inorganic counterpart, are reported. While the Mn2+ centers have an octahedral conformation, the two coordinating water molecules are found either in cis (1) or in trans (2) positions. The photophysical behavior of 1 reflects the luminescence of Mn2+ in an octahedral environment. Although Mn2+ in 2 also has octahedral coordination, at room temperature dual emission bands at ≈530 and ≈660 nm are observed, explained in terms of emission from Mn2+ in tetragonally compressed octahedra and self-trapped excitons (STEs), respectively. Above the room temperature, 2 shows quasi-tetrahedral behavior with intense green emission, while at temperatures below 140 K, another STE band emerges at 570 nm. Time-resolved experiments (77-360 K) provide a clear picture of the excited dynamics. 2 shows rising components due to STEs formation equilibrated at room temperature with their precursors. Finally, the potential of these materials for the fabrication of color-tunable down-converted light-emitting diode (LED) and for detecting polar solvent vapors is shown.

AIMS: Same-day discharge (SDD) after atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation is an effective means to spare healthcare resources. However, safety remains a concern, and besides structural adaptations, SDD requires more efficient logistics and coordination. Therefore, in this study, we implement a streamlined, nurse-coordinated SDD programme following a standardized protocol. METHODS AND RESULTS: As a dedicated SDD coordinator, a nurse specialized in ambulatory cardiac interventions was in charge of the full SDD protocol, including eligibility, patient flow, in-hospital logistics, patient education, and discharge as well as early post-discharge follow-up by smartphone-based virtual visits. Patients planned for AF ablation were considered eligible if they had a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≥35%, with basic support at home and accessibility of the hospital within 60 min also forming a part of the eligibility criteria. A total of 420 consecutive patients were screened by the SDD coordinator, of whom 331 were eligible for SDD. The reasons for exclusion were living remotely (29, 6.9%), lack of support at home (19, 4.5%), or LVEF <35% (17, 4.0%). Of the eligible patients, 300 (91%) were successfully discharged the same day. There were no major post-SDD complications. Rates of unplanned medical attention (19, 6.3%) and 30-day readmission (5, 1.6%) were extremely low and driven by femoral access-site complications. These were significantly reduced upon the introduction of compulsory ultrasound-guided punctures after the initial 150 SDD patients (P = 0.0145). Standardized SDD coordination resulted in efficient workflows and reduced the total workload of the medical staff. CONCLUSION: Same-day discharge after AF ablation following a nurse-coordinated standardized protocol is safe and efficient. The concept of ambulatory cardiac intervention nurses functioning as dedicated coordinators may be key in the future transition of hospitals to SDD. Ultrasound-guided femoral puncture virtually eliminated relevant femoral access-site complications in our cohort and should therefore be a prerequisite for SDD.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical pharmacy services often involve multifaceted pharmacist-led interventions. However, current pharmacy practice models vary across different countries. Despite the documented benefits of clinical pharmacy services, the characteristics of pharmacist-led interventions in different countries have not yet been adequately explored and described. Therefore, this protocol outlines the methodology for a proposed scoping review aiming to investigate various types of multifaceted pharmacist-led interventions and the outcomes used to evaluate their effectiveness within secondary care settings. Additionally, the scoping review will map the current evidence surrounding the characteristics of interventions and outcomes reported across various countries of socioeconomic status. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The scoping review will be conducted according to the JBI Methodology for Scoping Reviews and reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) Extension for Scoping Reviews. We will systematically search the following electronic databases: MEDLINE (Ovid), CINAHL (EbscoHost), Embase (embase.com), Scopus (scopus.com), Cochrane Library (cochranelibrary.com) and APA PsycInfo (Ovid). Additionally, the reference lists of identified reviews and included full texts will be searched for relevant papers. Grey literature sources, such as International Pharmaceutical Abstracts and the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) website, will be searched. We will include primary studies published in the English language from January 2013 to December 2023, involving secondary care multifaceted pharmacist-led interventions. Two independent reviewers will screen studies against eligibility criteria and use a piloted data extraction form to extract relevant information. We will extract relevant data, complete a tabular summary from each included publication and analyse it. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required as we will be using data from publicly available literature sources. Findings will be disseminated in publications and presentations with relevant stakeholders. We aim to map available evidence across the breadth of studies that have reported multifaceted pharmacist-led interventions and their outcomes.

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is hybrid imaging modality with good optical contrast and spatial resolution. Portable, cost-effective, smaller footprint light emitting diodes (LEDs) are rapidly becoming important PA optical sources. However, the key challenge faced by the LED-based systems is the low light fluence that is generally compensated by high frame averaging, consequently reducing acquisition frame-rate. In this study, we present a simple deep learning U-Net framework that enhances the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast of PA image obtained by averaging low number of frames. The SNR increased by approximately four-fold for both in-class in vitro phantoms (4.39 ± 2.55) and out-of-class in vivo models (4.27 ± 0.87). We also demonstrate the noise invariancy of the network and discuss the downsides (blurry outcome and failure to reduce the salt & pepper noise). Overall, the developed U-Net framework can provide a real-time image enhancement platform for clinically translatable low-cost and low-energy light source-based PA imaging systems.

BACKGROUND: Midwife-led birth centres (MLBCs) are associated with reduced childbirth interventions, higher satisfaction rates, and improved birth outcomes. The evidence on quality of care in MLBCs from low and middle-income countries (LMIC) is limited. AIM: This study aimed to explore the perceptions of women and midwives regarding the quality of care in four MLBCs in Uganda. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted in four MLBCs in Uganda. We conducted interviews with women and midwives in the MLBCs to explore their perceptions and experiences related to care in the MLBCs. The study obtained ethical approval. Deductive thematic analysis was used for data analysis. RESULTS: Three key themes were identified regarding the perceptions of women and midwives about the quality of care in the MLBCs: providing respectful, and dignified care; a focus on woman-centred care; and reasons for choosing care in the MLBC. Women valued the respectful and humane care characterised by dignified and non-discriminatory care, non-abandonment, privacy, and consented care. The woman-centred care in the MLBC involved individualised holistic care, providing autonomy and empowerment, continuity of care, promoting positive birth experience, confidence in the woman's own abilities, and responsive providers. Women chose MLBCs because the services were perceived to be available, accessible, affordable, with comprehensive and effective referral mechanisms. CONCLUSION: Women perceived care to be respectful, woman-centred, and of good quality. Global attention should be directed to scaling up the establishment of MLBCs, especially in LMIC, to improve the positive childbirth experience and increase access to care.
